PORTFOLIO
I have over 10 years' experience in community outreach and health education. I’m a strong advocate of health equity with a special interest in increasing healthcare access and eliminating disparities.
I'm competent in areas of technical writing and editing, developing reports, presentations and other publications, research literature reviews, conducting statistical analyses using SPSS and interpreting findings, and creating and managing databases for various types of research programs.
Below is a portfolio of health education project materials that I've developed. Project materials may be accessed by clicking on the icon accompanying each project summary.
Get S.M.A.R.T. Initiative
In 2015, I supported the Get S.M.A.R.T. (Students/Society Mobilized and Retooled to Transform) Initiative, which aims to reduce HIV/STIs and substance abuse among emerging adults on Morgan State University's campus.
The project encourages young adults to learn more about HIV/STIs and substance abuse, and to share that critical information with their social networks.
I worked with a project team to develop a 19-item sexual behavioral health survey for distribution to 100 MSU students on campus.
Team members collected and analyzed statistical data on students’ sexual behavioral attitudes using SPSS. We created an educational infographic and a poster depicting methods for reducing HIV and other STI risk for distribution to various high-traffic areas on campus.
Community Clinic Inc. Health Care Literacy Initiative
In 2014, I partnered with the federally-qualified non-profit, community-based health care agency Community Clinic, Inc., which serves 45,000 children and adults, to develop a health insurance literacy program for clinic patients.
I developed the CCI Health Insurance Literacy Initiative as an effort to help increase health insurance literacy among clinic patients through delivering quality health insurance educational materials to patients in clinic waiting rooms at seven area locations. I created four educational tools ranging between 4th and 8th grade Flesch-Kincaid reading levels and relating to health insurance literacy concepts, including:
(1) Pre- and post- insurance information workshop evaluation and knowledge surveys
(2) Health insurance deductible worksheet/math game
(3) Health insurance word scramble game
(4) Health insurance BINGO game
The outcome regarding which materials were implemented in clinic waiting rooms, and the frequency of their use could not be established. Consequently, I developed a proposed process and outcome evaluation scenario to assess the effectiveness of the health insurance literacy project in producing change in clinic patient’s level of knowledge of common health insurance literacy terms and concepts.
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Newsletter Article
In 2008, I contributed an article to the African American Health Program quarterly newsletter that provides an overview of colorectal cancer and recommended screening tests as a method of detection and prevention, as it is one of the most common cancers in adults and the third most common cancer found in men and women in the U.S.
